NEW RELEASE! "Brick & Mortar" is available now at cdbaby and live concerts! Download the whole album right into your ipod. Order your CD today! "Brick & Mortar" is the seventh release from Kate & Steve, with a dozen new songs written from inside the urban rim of Portland, Oregon to the high desert of Wallowa County. All originals, all live sounds.
From the cowboy saddle of "Wallowa" to the flirty romance of "Crush", the solitary sound of one man's voice in "Travis John (The Return)" to the compelling singalong of two thousand bicyclists riding Cycle Oregon "Under the Moon", "Brick & Mortar" delivers an exquisite dozen songs in their natural state as Kate & Steve harmonize, warm and live on ukuleles, banjos and guitars. "Brick & Mortar" was recorded over a few short days in the masterful hands of legendary engineer, Bob Stark at Kung Fu Bakery in Portland, Oregon. Authentic, beautiful and real.
Kate Power & Steve Einhorn are quality folk: musicians, writers, artists, community builders, Guinness World Record setters and songwriters. Power & Einhorn harmonize with the blessing of Pete Seeger and the Music to Life grand prize for "Travis John" from Kerrville, Texas. Anchors for legendary folk music center, Artichoke Music (1981-2006) in Portland, Oregon, Kate & Steve bring unique gifts to the table of Great Northwest folk. A performance from this duo is far more than music from two people, it is communion of the highest order, the kind that includes the beat of every heart in the room.
Other news includes Hearts of Space putting Power & Einhorn's "Bridget O'Malley" on the second track of a new release "Celtic Woman 3: Ireland" . Borrowed from the duo's "Now & Then" cd, this is the third Hearts of Space compilation featuring the beautiful celtic side of Kate's voice. Translated from its original Irish into the universal story of unrequited love, Bridget O'Malley is in good company with the lovely contributions by Mary Black, Cherish the Ladies, Eleanor McEvoy, Emer Kenny, Anuna, Skilda, Cathie Ryan, Maura O'Connell, Dolores Keane & Clannad. If you love the sound of Irish women singing beautiful songs, this recording is a must!
Featured as an Oregon favorite on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion", Kate & Steve promoting peace, love & goodwill with songs of romance, promise and hope. Pete Seeger sent "Travis John" to Bruce Springsteen to listen to. Choreographer Josie Moseley put "Travis John" on legs for the Oregon Ballet Theatre and the national stage. Oregon ArtBeat on Oregon Public Broadcasting followed the compelling story of "Travis John". Now "Travis John" returns in the first person in the voice of one man on "Brick & Mortar". This song continues to work for peace and reconcilation in performance and on the record.
Tracy Grammer describes them this way ... "Kate & Steve are my favorite folk duo. Their music embodies reverence -- for the craft of songwriting, for the folk tradition, for the audiences they sing to and for this complicated, terrible, beautiful world that we live in. Kate's earthy banjo and her emotive voice ring with compassion and hope; Steve's spot-on guitar leads and wry sense of humor are grounding, organic, the perfect complement. But all time stops when they sing together. Close your eyes and listen to that blend, friends -- that's where the love really shines through."
