VOX BOX vocal warm ups
These gentle vocal warm ups add flexibility, range and strength to the voice. Follow up the warm-ups with songs below the exercises for a full vocal tune-up for the day ahead. The exercises are followed by songs split into melody (Kate) and harmony (Steve) to practice singing and playing along.
Vocal exercises are used to open and strengthen the voice and develop suppleness and stamina. I learned most of these exercises in thirty years ago from Thomas Blaylock to restore my voice after my voice box was damaged from overuse. These vocal exercises done a few times a week will provide vocal strength and flexibility and is recommended to bring out the best in your voice for up to two hours before vocal performance.
Here's how...
ENGAGE your jaw. With your hand, gently but firmly open your mouth and hold your lower jaw in place as though pressing the corners of your mouth together, causing your mouth to be open and your jaw unable to close . Keep mouth movement to a minimum during the exercises. Breathe in and out a couple of times before starting. Sit straight with your legs uncrossed and all limbs at right angles for clear breath control and best sound delivery. You can stand if that's more comfortable. A mirror is helpful to as you learn this practice.
