The Story
In September 2015, Lono came from Molokai to make music and teach at the Tunes in the Dunes uke camp with Kate & Steve and others. The three musicians had met at this same camp five years before and Lono had a recording of Kate & Steve singing "The Water is Wide" from that first encounter. Although this song originated in Scotland in the 1600's, Lono had learned the song as a child in Hawaii, and long-envisioned an arrangement that overlaid the Hawaiian words atop the anglo verses. In this rare, one-of-a-kind performance, the trio manifested Lono's vision for the first time, as Sherry performed a beautiful hula created to be danced as they sang. Charts of both versions by the artists are below for your use and enjoyment.
